2.1. Masthead Exploration

Explore the typographic possibilities for a common masthead to be used on all covers, utilizing the name of your magazine. Your masthead should be essentially a logotype and use type only, no illustration or marks. However, you can manipulate type or hand create as needed. Look at other magazines and see what works best. The masthead has to be applied consistently on all covers, which means having to work on top of different backgrounds and be able to be big enough to build hierarchy in your layout. Often, shorter one word names work best.

Sketch at least 10 thumbnails. Then develop at least 3 rough different directions for your masthead, aiming to communicate the theme of your magazine to your target audience via typographic treatment.
